Sciatica is a common term used to describe the symptoms surrounding an inflamed or injured sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is a large nerve that travels from our lower spine into the back of each leg. Along this pathway, it can be trapped or irritated by a number of causes. For example, the sciatic nerve can be trapped by a herniated disc or by muscles in the buttocks called the piriformis, which in turn leads to the symptoms of sciatica.

These symptoms can range from mild to debilitating, usually involving pain, numbness or weakness in the leg that is affected. Since the sciatic nerve is so large, it can affect many areas of the lower body, including the buttocks, thighs, calves and feet. The intensity of the pain can vary with activity and may worsen throughout the day. Such activities can include heavy lifting, bending, sitting for prolonged periods, and even coughing or sneezing. The pain itself can be sharp, achy, burning or ‘electric’ in sensation, often shooting down the affected leg.

If you are suffering from sciatica, then care at Chiropractic Touch can help. On the first visit, the chiropractor will take a detailed history and examination to find out the cause of your sciatica. This diagnosis is especially important given the wide range of causes of sciatica. If required, x-rays (bulk-billed) or an MRI may be requested to rule out other injuries.

Once the diagnosis is established, the chiropractor will prepare a treatment plan best catered for you. Due to the range of causes of sciatica, the treatment required may be different from one patient to another.
